for arte/zdf

a film by Chrysanthi Goula & Elke Sasse

30 min., arte/zdf 2021

The mountains of Pindos are a pristine, pure area of clear water, fresh air, all kind of herbs and wild fruits, but it is also a mushroom paradise. Hundreds different mushrooms grow here. We learn a lot from Katerina and Ilias, two mushroom pickers and lovers and we enjoy the simplicity and the amazing sounds of the clarinet musician Yiannis in the forest. Our protagonists are also great cookers and share with us their secrets.

Sound of Freedom

for arte/zdf

a film by Chrysanthi Goula, Ulrike Neubecker & Bernard Wedig

2 x 52 min., arte/zdf/DW 2019

The two-part documentary “Sound of Freedom” goes back to the roots of the music of hope and rebellion, and to the sounds that have inspired unconventional thinkers and the oppressed. From “La Marseillaise” to “Bella Ciao” to “We Shall Overcome”, “I Will Survive” and “Wind of Change”. Spanning Jimi Hendrix to Serge Gainsbourg, all the way to Pussy Riot. With the international super-hits of freedom, the films take us from the 18th century to the present day – from Billy Holiday to Nina Simone, Beyoncé and numerous others.

Music is a tool for mobilisation, it is the embodiment of hope and the utopia of a better life. It provides solidarity to the oppressed, rouses resistance movements and emboldens revolutionaries.

Immersing in a watertank

short documentary (2015, 24’, Cuba)

We arrived in February, in the late evening at the ‘Proyecto Comunitario Muraleando’ . We knocked on the big colourfully painted garage door. Armando opened it. His skin had a milk chocolate colour, his face a lot of wrinkles. He wore big rectangle glasses, had a cigar in his hand and an enormously warm smile. That’s how this journey began.

Muraleando is a project which started in 2001 in Lawton, a neighborhood of Havana, giving free art classes to children. In the beginning it was taking place in schools but after a few years the classes were held on the street. As the interest from the local community got bigger, they needed a place to continue. This was the time when they decided to reconstruct an old water tank and step by step transformed it into a colourful space with different classrooms and a terrace with a view to the city. Since then, it functions like a cultural center for the local community offering various free workshops to the children, while at the same time collaborating with artists from around the world. To continue the project, they gather money through tourist visits mostly from the USA, but also from other places of the world.

It is an observational documentary, capturing and reflecting on the everyday life in this space, the interactions between the members of the project and the neighborhood, as well as the tourist visits, and thus highlighting this two-pole.

A SHORT FILM TRILOGY

3 short documentaries (2016, Thessaloniki)

headache

uncomfortable experiment

The main character is my aunt. She is the one who made me see the magic of the moving images, of the storytelling, of the possibility to tell my own stories through the camera. It is like a homage to her. She inspires me and that’s why I made those shorts.

In the first film “headache”, I am observing her watching a face massage show on TV.

In the film “after laughter comes laughter”, I am capturing a very funny moment at her place with two of her friends, my mother and my godmother. They are narrating hot stories from some old friends, who have all died, but the prevailing sound is a non-stop laughter -they can barely speak without laughing.

In the third film”uncomfortable experiment”, I am asking her some questions, like how she feels about USA and the wood, what kind of rooms she prefers (rectangle, round ones?..), what makes her feel pressure. Simple questions which lead to deeper thoughts and realisations.
